Your customers ask AI now. Almost no local business shows up.

Owners keep hearing about AI search. Almost none of them show up in it. Here are five numbers from this year that show the gap, and what to do about it this week.

Customers moved fast.

In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of US consumers said they used an AI tool like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to find a local business in the past 12 months. A year earlier it was 6%.

That is seven and a half times as many people in one year. And they aren't scrolling ten blue links. They ask one question, like "who's the best plumber near me?", and get one short answer with a few names in it.

Businesses did not.

SOCi looked at more than 350,000 business locations. 35.9% of them showed up in Google's local 3-pack, the map box at the top of a Google search. ChatGPT recommended 1.2%.

That's about one business named by ChatGPT for every 30 in Google's 3-pack. Gemini did better at 11%. Perplexity landed at 7.4%. None came close to Google.

Ranking on Google does not get you into ChatGPT.

Different engine, different reading list. AI reads your reviews, your listings, the roundups and articles that mention you, and whether your own site answers the question in plain words. A business can win the map and still be missing from the answer.

The traffic is worth more.

Seer Interactive measured what visitors do after they arrive. Visits that came from ChatGPT converted at 15.9%. Visits from Google organic search converted at 1.76%. That's about 9 times better.

It makes sense. By the time AI names you, it has already answered the customer's questions: price range, hours, reviews, who's close. The person who clicks through is ready to book, call or buy.

Owners know it matters. Nobody tells them how.

Squarespace surveyed 1,041 small business owners in April 2026. 66% said AI search is very or extremely important. Nearly six in ten said they don't know where to start. More than half said they are not optimized for it at all.

Google clicks keep getting pricier.

Focus Digital found Google Ads cost per click grew about 3.3% a month on average in Q2 2026. Part of the reason, they say: Google's AI Overviews cut organic visibility, which pushes budgets into paid search.

Every ad click is rent. Stop paying and you disappear. When AI names you in its answer, nobody bills you per click.

Owning the answer costs less than renting the ad.

What to do this week

  1. See where you stand

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok the questions your customers ask, in your city. Our free check does it in about 30 seconds and shows the answers word for word, with your name highlighted.

Wellgreens 66%

First Mention comes out of Wellgreens, a San Diego dispensary chain. In our run for the week of Sept 7, ChatGPT and Gemini named Wellgreens in 66% of 180 answers, across 36 questions and 4 locations. See the live numbers.

California Merchant Solutions 0 to 5 of 6

Our ATM placement company wasn't named in any of 6 ChatGPT and Gemini answers. We added 14 answer pages to cmsatm.com and asked the engines again. Now it's named in 5 of 6, and first in 2. See the project.
